Download custom shapes and add them to Photoshop
To do this exercise, you need to download the United States custom shapes and add them to your Photoshop CS3 installation.
Click on the link and download the USA Shape Set for Photoshop. It's free. You will need to create a sign in ID for Adobe to do this. You'll end up with a file called United_State_Shapes_2.csh downloaded to your computer. Copy that file into the custom shapes directory for Photoshop. The path for the directory is Program Files -> Adobe ->Adobe Photoshop CS3 -> Presents -> Custom Shapes.

Exit out of Photoshop and restart Photoshop.
Find a picture of oranges and peanuts and save them.
Open the picture of the oranges.

Use the rectangular selection tool and draw a box around some of the oranges. Go to the Edit menu and select Define Pattern.
Create a new file.

Select the custom shape tool from the tool menu.

At the top of the screen, where the custom shape tool options appear, click on "Shape" and find Florida. Select Florida.

Draw the state of Florida. Be sure to hold down the shift key to "constrain" the shape of Florida so it has the correct aspect ratio (and is not too fat or too skinny).

Go to the Layer menu and select Change Layer Content. Select pattern from the sub menu.

The orange pattern, since it was the last one you created, should show up automatically as the default. If you defined other patterns, click on the pattern and more will be displayed. Find your oranges pattern and then click ok.

Open up the image of peanuts, define a peanut pattern, and then close the peanut picture.

Create a new layer. Select New from the Layer menu and then select Layer.

Select the Custom Shape Tool and then select Georgia as the custom shape. Draw Georgia, again using the shift key to constrain the proportions. After Georgia is drawn, go to the Layer menu and select Change Layer Content and then select Pattern. Select the peanuts and hit ok.

Chances are your states won't fit together perfectly because they'll be different sizes. Resize the shapes as needed, but remember to hold down the shift key while you do this.
